Siem Reap: Archaeologists investigating the living standards of people in the vicinity of temples. Through excavation and research, archaeologists assumed that the compound Sunflowers men were about 75 thousand. The new findings are different from human thinking general who understands temple is surrounded by thick forest and uninhabited.
Recent newspaper cites an article by Dr. Alison Kyra Carter talked about a team of researchers to try to understand the everyday life of the people in the Angkor era, and the article was published in the official Facebook page of the Apsara Authority.Read the full text below:
If we imagine the temple Wat, we might think about good enormous manipulation and surrounded by dense forests. Recently, archaeologists have said from the temple constructed there are many places around the likely places where people live. Angkor Wat is the heart of the empire spread over 1000 km. 2 and may be inhabited by 750,000 people. Greater Angkor Project GAP (Great Angkor Project) has questioned whether the Angkor era Where?. The project is a joint research program of the University of Sydney, led by Dr. Roland Fletcher and Apsara Authority.
To begin to understand the lives of ordinary people at Angkor archaeologists dug Household equipment of the people of that generation. Through the excavation of their own place to live, we can understand the living habits of the past. This work could provide more information on the differences between families, communities and living areas and between the rich upper class and ordinary people, so we can begin to understand the social at Angkor sub superiors.
Archaeological studies at Angkor has focused first on the castle mansion whose inscriptions tell us about the divine king and hero. We have little information about ordinary people's everyday life in Angkor. In 1296, a Chinese envoy Zhou Daguan visited Angkor and described what he had seen. He wrote that people in the higher caste large house with a tile roof, and ordinary people live in small thatched roof house. This is the only tangible evidence of the Angkorian home. But we also know from contemporary Angkor temple idol showed homes and everyday life time. In addition, the French archaeologist and a group of Khmer excavations of the houses in the area outside the perimeter of Angkor while studies of living in central region Angkor, a collection of temples, and many people are living, we have very little information.
In several studies of the project GAP Dr Miriam Stark made excavation in the Angkor Wat temple complex, to find evidence of residence of the people, for inscriptions that some people living in the vicinity, for example inscriptions in the temple describes people who are connected to the castle, which is estimated to be approximately 2,000 people living in castle walls.
In 2012, the research on this subject has received technical assistance from new Lidar laser that can pierce forest cover so that the structure can be seen on the ground that plant cover. In Sunflowers Lidar has been proven around the castle hill and lowland neat row cell toilets banteatsrab four directions.
In 2010 and 2013 GAP studied these places by small body hole size 1 mm x2 in many places around Angkor Wat. This study showed evidence of a hill where people live. Technical radioactive coal have shown that these places are prepared for living.. 10.. 13. Our study also confirmed that on the ground these places inhabited Angkor era.. 15.. 17.
These results make us thrilled, but little excavation and inspired a lot of questions. In June and July 2015 after receiving funding of the National Geographic I organized research group represented by the University of Sydney and the Apsara Authority (far) to enlarge excavation of land in the same places in the walls of Angkor Wat.
The point is that the research is as follows:
1. We want to know what really have people living on the hill? Our small pit dug to provide a positive answer on this question. We can expect large-scale excavation, we found remnants of the wreckage and other evidence of life on the hill.
2. We want to know how ordinary people lived on this hill? We believe that this is probably true because that smaller places that can make them think too small. The findings from the building and the type of evidence used by the family will make us better understand the materials that were used.
3 . We want to know what the hill can be used as a long-term many times, or not? .
On the occasion, we went down to research in mid-2015, we dug on a hill that has been described above a pit of 22 total area 41 m2. Results: Although we did not find home form as a whole, we found the footprints pillar that can be considered a part of the house. We also found:
1. Sandstone: We believe that those who live in Wat may sandstone left over from the construction of Angkor Wat, but we do not they were aware that these rocks do.We thought maybe they took it to spread a bumpy road or under the house or laying around the house.
2. Evidence of the activities related to family cooking. At that part of the hill we found burnt brick and clay, as well as:
- Coal and wreckage investigation dream as evidence of the use of fire for cooking in Angkor
- Most ceramics are brittle ceramics, and some scar of the fire from the outside, which can be caused by cooking on the fire. Angkorian pieces generation vessel with smooth layers of green or brown and pans imported from China. We also found that undermined the overall appearance of a position to conclude that the housing.
Besides the ceramic plant expert, Mrs. Cristina Castillo found grain pieces of orange peel waste plant in the ginger family, and some plants used Drug users. The work that we started to learn about plants, fruits and vegetables that people living on the hill that may be eaten and used.
Besides, we have dug on the plains: Despite suspected pond here as our geological experts have found that here there is only water rainy season. Therefore can not serve as a pool of water khuobabrangkhuobavossaa.
These jobs must continue to respond to the remaining questions, so we hope to continue to search for evidence related to the everyday life people at Angkor.
In conclusion, we consider that research should not focus only on the temples are also focusing on the lives and achievements of the Angkor era.
